Former Metropolitan Police counter-terrorism commander Pete Newman will stand for Reform UK in the Holborn & St Pancras by-election.

Newman served as a senior Met detective between 2004 and 2009, working across London - including in Holborn & St Pancras - to reduce crime, improve public safety and increase counter-terrorism security.

Following the Islamist 7/7 bombings in 2005, he led the Met’s response in Westminster, helping the borough return to normality and supporting businesses to become more resilient against future terrorist attacks.

Since retiring from the Met, Newman has worked as a security and investigative consultant.

Announcing his candidacy, Newman said he was “humbled and honoured” to represent Reform UK.

“As a former police detective, it depresses me to see the state of crime and policing in our capital”, he said. “Residents no longer feel safe and our police officers are struggling to cope.”

Newman accused Labour of ignoring police-station closures and Mayor Sadiq Khan of continuing to “gaslight Londoners over their safety”.

“I’m standing to ensure that people in Holborn & St Pancras feel safe on their own streets again”, he said. “They deserve more than the chaos of Labour and the divisive and contradictory politics of the Green Party.

“Only Reform UK can offer them hope and a fresh start.”
