Residents of a small village in rural Essex have found themselves at the sharp end of Labour’s border chaos.
In Wethersfield, the government plans to increase the number of asylum seekers at a former RAF airfield from 766 to 1,245. With a parish population of roughly 1,300, that means Wethersfield will have nearly as many illegal immigrants as residents.
These former military barracks are not a secure detention centre. Rather, the men housed there are free to leave the site and move around the surrounding community, leaving local people to deal with the consequences.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage described the conditions facing local people in Wethersfield: “Intimidation, shouting and public defecation. This is the reality of living among illegals as reported by residents in Wethersfield.” Farage said that locals have described the situation as “hell”.
For the people of Wethersfield, closing asylum hotels has not meant solving the crisis. It has meant shifting the burden onto a small rural community that never asked to become the dumping ground for Britain’s failed border policy.
A Reform UK government would end this scandal by doing what this and previous governments have been too cowardly to do - securely detaining and deporting illegal immigrants, rather than leaving them free to roam around local communities.
The fact is that we have no idea who these undocumented asylum seekers are. And, as it turns out, many of them have no right to be in the country in the first place. A damning review has revealed that four in five asylum grant decisions checked by Home Office officials were made with insufficient evidence and were “likely to be incorrect”. Out of 47 random cases reviewed from August and September last year, 37 were waved through despite officials failing to gather the evidence needed to justify letting them stay.
Even worse, inspectors found that staff were being pressured to prioritise speed over accuracy. The asylum backlog may have been cut, but at what cost? Clearing cases quickly is not a success if the result is more people being allowed to stay in the country without proper scrutiny.
The report also found that poorly trained officials had used AI tools such as ChatGPT and Copilot in asylum decision letters and interviews. This means that Britain’s border control was, in some cases, being handed over to officials relying on unauthorised technology to decide who gets to stay in the country. Who knows what errors or data breaches this may have caused?
A Reform UK government will never grant asylum to anybody who has entered Britain illegally. If you break into this country, you should not be rewarded with the right to stay.
Meanwhile, taxpayers are picking up the bill for Labour’s failure. Ministers admitted last week that asylum accommodation and support cost £4 billion last year, while a parliamentary report found the wider asylum system cost around £4.9 billion in 2024 and 2025. Labour’s big answer is to ask some asylum seekers to repay around £10,000 before they are allowed to settle permanently in Britain. But this is pure fantasy. Most are not working, many never will, and they are already being supported by our welfare state. The idea that they will ever be able to repay their debts is laughable.
Only Reform UK is prepared to end this cycle. As Farage put it: “Only a Reform government will detain and deport every illegal rather than dumping them in local communities.”
