More than 200 companies fined for employing illegal workers are still being allowed to sponsor foreign workers to come to Britain.
An investigation by GB News and Cambridge Circus Research found that 208 firms, fined a total of £9.3 million, have remained continuously on the Home Office’s visa sponsor register since receiving their penalties.
They include care companies, fast food outlets, petrol stations, corner shops, bars, cafes and a car dealership.
Businesses caught breaking immigration rules should face serious consequences. Yet these firms have retained access to the very system that allows them to recruit workers from abroad.
Home Office guidance sets out circumstances in which sponsor licences should be revoked, including repeated illegal-working penalties. However, the investigation could not establish how many of the companies met those criteria.
Rob Bates, of the Centre for Migration Control, described the sponsor register as “a complete mess”, calling for an overhaul.
This would never be allowed to happen under a Reform government. Reform UK would deport all illegal immigrants and introduce its Deliveroo Law, making bosses of large companies personally and criminally liable for profiting from cheap, illegal labour. Employers must no longer treat Britain’s immigration laws as optional.
