“Londoners are being taken for mugs”: Fare dodging in Khan’s London is costing £190 million a year
After last year’s increase in Tube fares, many Londoners would expect to see tougher action against fare dodging on transport in the capital.

But the crackdown on fare dodging under Operation Vector, launched last month, has so far resulted in just five penalty fares a day and an average of less than one arrest per day across the entire London transport network – despite official estimates putting the cost of fare evasion to Transport for London (TfL) at about £190 million a year.

Reform UK London Chair and Mayoral Candidate Laila Cunningham stated: “The taxpayer pays for the transport system. The honest commuter pays for their ticket. The fare dodger pays nothing.

And who gets punished? The people who actually follow the rules, facing higher fares while others walk through the barriers for free.’

Londoners are being taken for mugs.”
Reform UK’s London mayoral candidate Laila Cunningham says fare dodgers are walking through the barriers for free while honest commuters face higher fares.
Under Khan’s leadership, Londoners have been failed time and again. Knife crime has become a serious problem, a housing crisis is pushing Londoners to the financial brink, and ULEZ has declared war on the capital’s motorists.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. Under Reform, Londoners would feel safe in their city again.

Reform will put police officers back on our streets, restore effective stop and search, prioritise the prosecution of violent and sexual offenders, expand prison capacity and deport foreign criminals. We will restore consequences for breaking the law. And that includes fare dodging.

Reform MP Robert Jenrick, who confronted fare dodger himself, in a viral video last year said:

“The increase in Tube fares last year matches the amount of money lost through fare dodging. Law-abiding commuters are being made to pay for the fare-dodging epidemic with higher prices.

“Nothing will change if we continue to see such pitiful levels of enforcement. With fewer than one arrest a day on the Tube, fare dodgers know they almost certainly won’t face any consequences.”
