Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has warned that illegal Channel crossings are a “national security emergency”, as Labour ministers promise to spread asylum seekers more “fairly” across the country.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said that “all parts of the country need to play their part” in housing illegal immigrants, arguing that poorer areas should not bear all the pressure.
Home Office minister Anna Turley went further this morning, saying communities would receive their “fair share”. She was responding to concerns over Labour’s proposal to house up to 1,250 single adult male asylum seekers at a former Ministry of Defence site near Piddington, Oxfordshire - a village of fewer than 400 people.
Turley insisted that the migrants would not be housed “in the village” but on “self-contained” sites where they could be “managed and processed”. But according to the Home Office, they would not be detained and would be free to come and go. Cherwell District Council says that it was not consulted before the proposal was announced and has raised concerns about security, community safety and local infrastructure.
Labour’s answer to the boats crisis is not to stop illegal crossings, but to move those who arrive from one accommodation site to another - and to tell communities across Britain that they must simply put up with large numbers of undocumented, potentially dangerous young men in their local areas.
Labour calls this “fairness”. But real fairness means being fair to the British people: putting their safety and communities first - not illegal immigrants.
Farage said: “Burnham wants to destroy the whole country. He says all parts of Britain need to take more illegal migrants.”
“A Reform government will take a different approach. We will detain and deport every single one of them. British communities have had enough of this!”
This comes after a record 230 illegal immigrants arrived in Britain in a single dinghy from France earlier this week. Farage said the situation should be treated as “a national security emergency”.
Only Reform UK is offering an actual solution to this crisis, by stopping the boats before they even reach our shores. Under Reform’s Operation Fortress, the Royal Navy and Royal Marines would intercept every boat attempting to cross the Channel and return those on board to France. Illegal immigrants already in Britain would be securely detained, and then deported. A Reform government would also close asylum hotels and leave the European Convention on Human Rights to ensure that we have control over our borders once again.
