Voters in Clacton have made clear that they are standing firmly behind Reform UK leader Nigel Farage as he prepares to fight the upcoming by-election.
Farage stepped down as MP for Clacton in order to trigger the contest, in which he will stand again and ask local voters to decide whether he should continue to represent them.
Speaking to Reform UK, residents repeatedly said that they believed Farage had done nothing wrong and accused the political establishment of trying to force him out.
One voter said he would support him “without a doubt”. Another explained: “I think they’re trying to find dirt on Farage, and there isn’t any. He claims that he’s done nothing wrong, and I actually believe him.”
Another resident was equally emphatic. “I’ll vote for him again,” he said. “He’s the only one who talks any sense.”
Asked whether he believed the establishment was hounding Farage, he replied: “Yes, they’re all out to get him.”
One woman said that the attacks against him had “gone on for long enough”. “As far as I’m concerned”, she said, “I will be voting Reform and I will be voting for Farage.”
Others accused Westminster of treating Farage disgracefully.
“I think that the establishment have been absolutely appalling to Nigel”, one woman said. “I think he’s a good man, and the way they treat him is terrible. They persecute him all the time, and he’s only trying to do good for this country”.
She added: “I voted Reform, my mum voted Reform, and I will still vote Reform.”
Another voter described Farage simply as “the top man”, praising him as one of the few politicians with the courage to take on the old parties.
“He’s about the only one who’s got any guts”, he said. Another praised Farage: “He’s called their bluff, and they’re all sweating.”
He also claimed that Labour was refusing to put forward a candidate in the Clacton by-election because they are afraid of voters. “Labour won’t stand because they know they’ll get slaughtered”, he said. “He’s standing up against the establishment for what the average Brit wants, and they don’t like it, do they?”
The message from Clacton was clear. Local voters believe the decision over who represents them should rest with them, not with parliamentary committees or political insiders.
As one resident put it: “He says he’s done nothing wrong. I believe he’s done nothing wrong, and it’s up to us to decide who represents us.”
