Reform UK Chairman Lee Anderson has travelled to the migrant camps of northern France for a new documentary on the Channel crossings crisis.
Filming between Calais and Dunkirk, Anderson found squalid camps, bonfires, rubbish and illegal immigrants preparing to cross the Channel in small boats. And the boats are getting bigger: a record 230 people crossed the Channel in a single vessel on Monday.
After speaking to a male immigrant who claimed to have made six unsuccessful attempts to cross, Anderson said: “They might stop the boats, but they’re not stopping the people. Eventually they will get here.”
Anderson also accused NGOs operating near the camps of encouraging crossings rather than preventing them. “Every single death in the Channel is avoidable”, he said. “They’re literally encouraging people to come here and get on those dinghies.”
Anderson warned that the conditions in northern France were worsening - and that Britain will face the consequences unless action is taken. “If I came back in three years’ time, it would be even worse”, he said.
