The debacle in Worcestershire County Council this week should dispel any last notions that the Conservatives are a right-wing party.
Since the 2025 local elections, Reform UK had been running Worcestershire council as a minority administration. But yesterday, Tory group leader Adam Kent decided to try to take control - by forming a coalition with the Greens, the Liberal Democrats, and independents.
Kent took this baffling decision despite admitting that his party disagreed with the Greens on basically every single national issue. But this didn’t stop the Tories from uniting with the Greens to keep Reform UK out.
Kent has since been suspended by the party and Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch rushed in to condemn the coalition, but the damage was already done. This episode has exposed just how low the Tories are willing to sink to keep Reform UK away from power.
The Conservatives are supposed to be a right-wing party that believes in strong borders and low tax. This is of course hard to believe, seeing as they left the country with open borders and the highest tax burden in generations.
Tory loyalists, however, would argue that the so-called “Kemi bounce” is now in full flow, that the party is under new leadership and is ready to take on Reform UK at the next general election. This is pure delusion. We all saw last week’s results in the local elections, when the Tories were battered at the ballot box. We wiped them out in many of their former strongholds, including in Essex - where half of the Conservative Shadow Cabinet have their constituencies.
The actions of the Worcestershire Conservatives this week must have blown the minds of even the most loyal Tory supporters. They deliberately chose to elect a Green leader of the council and boot out the minority Reform UK administration. This being despite the incredible work of our councillors to stop the council from being issued a bankruptcy notice. Reform UK saved Worcestershire from “curtains”.
This is the uniparty at its worst. In 2025, 31% of people in Worcestershire voted for Reform UK. The Tories, the Greens, and the Lib Dems all decided that their voices didn’t deserve to be heard. Conservative voters would do well to remember this - if you vote Tory, you may well get Green.
It is now undeniable that, no matter what its leadership claims, the Tory party is still chock full of wokey pokey MPs who have more in common with the Greens than with Reform UK - a genuinely right-wing party.
The truth is, the Tories were caught red-handed conspiring against both their own voters and those who voted Reform UK. The lesson is clear: never trust a Tory - and never jump in bed with mad Polanski.
