Reform UK’s Shadow Home Secretary Zia Yusuf has condemned Labour’s decision to reopen the UK Resettlement Scheme, announcing that a Reform government would revoke the right to stay of anyone who arrives under it.
“Shabana Mahmood’s plans will mean more migrants and more Afghan criminals arriving in our country. It’s a complete disgrace”, he said. “The British public has been sold out so Burnham can keep Angela Rayner happy.”
Yusuf added: “Anyone thinking about arriving under these schemes should think twice. Under a Reform government, all these people will have their right to stay revoked immediately and be deported.”
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced on Monday that the scheme had reopened for new referrals. The government says applicants will undergo identity, security and criminal records checks before travelling to Britain - but given previous catastrophic vetting failures, how can the British public trust that these checks will actually catch dangerous individuals?
The first arrivals under the reopened scheme are expected before the end of this year. Labour also plans three routes through which community groups, universities and employers can sponsor refugees. Those admitted will be placed on a five-year path to permanent settlement.
Mahmood has claimed the decision as a way to offer refugees a legal route to Britain and reduce the number of illegal immigrants making their way here. But you cannot “solve” illegal immigration by making it legal. A Reform government would send the Royal Navy to stop all small boats in the Channel, deport all illegal immigrants, and revoke the right to stay of anybody who comes here under Labour’s resettlement schemes.
