Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced today that she’s U-turning on what she originally said she would do – cracking down on indefinite leave to remain (ILR).
The British people have been ignored and smeared time and again when it comes to immigration. Reform is listening to them.
That’s why we announced last year that we would abolish indefinite leave to remain altogether. We will introduce a new five-year renewable work visa with proper, sensible thresholds. If you’re going to come here, you need to be contributing economically.
The ask that Reform has – that Nigel Farage will have as Prime Minister – of people coming to this country is: more than pay your way economically, do not commit crime and speak English.
Those hardly sound like unfair standards.
The primary work visa will be renewable every five years, and it will require a threshold of earnings commensurate with you being a meaningful net contributor to the British economy.
Yes, we would have a programme for spouses of British citizens, and we would have an acute skills shortage visa for people in critical national industries. That would include, for example, people working in the care sector.
A Reform government will immediately launch a review into every citizenship granted by this Labour government from this point on to anyone who has received a passport who would not have received one had Shabana Mahmood not made her announcement today.
Those are the people who are in scope, and I think that’s entirely fair. It’s entirely fair on the British people.
It’s the job of foreign governments to take care of their citizens. It’s the job of the British government to take care of British citizens, and we’re going to be unapologetic about that.
Secondly, we are announcing that we will extend the waiting time for British citizenship to ten years.
British passports have been handed out like confetti. The number of British passports granted over the last 20 years is two-and-a-half times the number handed out in the previous 20 years. That is the scale of the increase.
We appreciate this is a big step. We’ve thought deeply about it. But we really do believe this next general election is existential for the British people.
While there are lots of other parties out there willing to call this a catastrophe, call it a scandal, call it a scam, and publish big numbers – including on the Treasury’s own website – about what all of this will cost, Nigel Farage is the only political leader willing to have the courage to make the argument for the medicine required to get this country back on its feet.
We are unapologetic. The people we will serve in government, the people Nigel Farage will serve as Prime Minister, are the British people.
We will put the British people first.
