Andy Burnham is prepared to spend even more taxpayer money moving asylum seekers into wealthier parts of Britain.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage previously warned that Burnham wants every part of the country to take more illegal immigrants. He said British communities have “had enough” - and stressed that a Reform government would detain and deport every illegal immigrant in Britain.
Now it has emerged that Burnham is considering raising the rent caps used by private contractors to source asylum seekers in more expensive areas, even at greater cost to taxpayers.
Burnham has said he does not want asylum seekers housed only in the country’s “poorest communities” and believes all parts of the country should “play their part”. His plans have already sparked anger in Piddington, Oxfordshire, where a former military base is set to house 1,250 male asylum seekers near a village of fewer than 400 people.
Unlike the secure facilities that a Reform government would use, these sites are unguarded, and undocumented, fighting-age men will be free to roam the local community - including in villages like Piddington, where they outnumber residents.
There are now almost 100,000 people receiving asylum support in Britain, including more than 20,000 in hotels. Tens of thousands more are housed in flats, houses and HMOs across the country.
Farage said Burnham had “no more guts to deal with this” than Rishi Sunak or Boris Johnson. “They tell the public what they want to hear. None of them have got the balls to actually deal with this,” he added. “And I’ll tell you what, I have.”
A Reform government would stop the boats, close the asylum hotels and end the use of ordinary homes to house illegal immigrants in local communities. Anyone in Britain illegally would be securely detained before being deported.
